Halloween Happenings in Iowa City 2010

Halloween Weekend is coming up. Here are some of the fun things you can be doing in Iowa City this weekend.

Live Entertainment

The Halloween Bash at Gabe’s, starts at 9pm on Saturday and features local favorites Nebula Was, Mad Monks, and Five in a Hand. Admission is $5.

The Mill has a special Halloween Show at 9.00pm Saturday with Celtic rockers Wylde Nept performing. On Sunday October 31 they have their 3rd Halloween tribute show. The idea is that local bands play music from great bands from the past.

The Yacht Club has live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday and gets into the Halloween spirit big time at 9pm Sunday with a special Halloween show with Dead Larry and Roster McCabe. Admission is $6.

Costume Parties

On Saturday you can head on over to the Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon for their Halloween Costume Party. There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. The fun begins at 8.00pm and goes through midnight.

Brothers Bar is having a costume contest throughout the entire weekend with prizes for the best costumes.

Scary movies definitely get plenty of attention around Halloween. It will come as no surprise to you that the only new movie out this week is a horror flick. Saw 3D is sure to be a frightening success. For Halloween fans it’s a great opportunity to don that costume, head for the cinema and be scared to death. In 3D no less – Definitely not for the squeamish!

You can check out movie times and schedules at the Coral Ridge Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Cinema in Iowa City

New Movies & Events in Iowa City & Coralville This Weekend

It’s Friday again and time for my weekly update on new movies in Iowa City and Coralville. I’ll start with the new movie releases for March 19 and include a couple of my hot picks on things to do in Iowa City this weekend.

You can check the schedule for movies at the Coral Ridge Mall Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Cinema in Iowa City…

3 new movies in our theaters this week.
I’ll start with Repo Men, simply because I’m a huge Jude Law fan. Interesting concept too, repossessing vital organs from bad payers. Might be just a touch too gruesome for me though – I’m a bit on the squeamish side. Since it seems I’m doing this in order of favorite actor this week, the next new movie out today is Bounty Hunter with Jennifer Aniston. She’s the bounty and it’s her ex-husband tasked with job of hunting her down. Sounds like nice light entertainment to me. I’m sure it will do well. Final new movie for this week is Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Based on the best seller of the same name I’m sure kids will make sure this one is a hit.

When it comes to live entertainment you can’t beat The Mill – as you must know by now if you’re a regular reader of my blog. Tonight, Leslie & The Ly’s is performing, along with Christopher the Conquered. Apparently this is a show like no other with sensational costumes and unbelievable dance moves. For anyone who likes quirky this looks like it’s going to be quite a show!

This week The Mill beat out the Iowa City Yacht Club for acts with the most creative name too.
(Usually the Yacht Club runs away with this title as you’ll know if you’re a regular reader). On Saturday the Burning Halos and friends are promising a night of insanity at the Mill! I guess it’s Spring Break. Anything goes…

Still on the subject of Spring Break The Iowa City Yacht Club has good music to offer too on Saturday with Head for the Hills + Filling Space + Songbird Bethann.

If you’re up for something more sedate and you like your country music with dance then check out the
Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon. Great music and great food and free wi-fi…They often have specials too like all you can eat ribs on Wednesdays…They’re on Facebook and do a better job than anyone else I’ve seen using that media to give info on specials and upcoming events.

Another weekend favorite, also a little more sedate is the Riverside Casino. They have a class act there this weekend – The Pointer Sisters are performing there on Saturday. Now I remember their hits like Slow Hand and I’m So Excited. Do you?

So much for my hot picks. For more ideas on things to do in Iowa City this weekend I’ve written a couple of posts pulling things together making it easier for you to find theaters and live entertainment venues in Iowa City.

New Movies and Events This Weekend in Iowa City & Coralville

What’s new at the movies this weekend in Iowa City and Coralville? Seems my weekly post is gathering quite a following asking that question. Here’s what’s coming out today, February 26, along with a few other ideas of things to do in Iowa City this weekend.

You can check the schedule for movies at the Coral Ridge Mall Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Cinema in Iowa City…

And now onto what’s new… Two new releases this week. The first is a Kevin Smith movie, Cop Out starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. Sounds like a pretty average storyline with two NYPD partners on the trail of a stolen mint condition baseball card. It doesn’t get particularly good reviews, but I’m going to bet that doesn’t mean a thing. This is Bruce Willis – Who cares about good reviews?

The Crazies
is the other new movie out today and is loosely based on the book of the same name. It stars Timothy Olyphant and is about what happens to the residents of a small town after toxins infect their water supply – Mayhem ensues as they loose their sanity and start killing each other off. I’m going to reserve opinion on this one, except to say if you’re looking for a feel good movie, this isn’t it!

Looking for live entertainment?
The Mill is one of the liveliest places in town and will be especially lively this weekend. Orquesta Alto Maiz, AKA The Salsa Band is performing tonight, (Friday) and it’s the Vagina Monologues on Saturday.

If you like your country music with dance then check out the Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon. Great music and great food and free wi-fi…They often have specials too like all you can eat ribs on Wednesdays…They’re on Facebook and do a better job than anyone else I’ve seen using that media to give info on specials and upcoming events.

I’m going to round it up this week with
The Iowa City Yacht Club. Couldn’t resist telling you that Trampled by Turtles + The Boomchucks will be playing there tonight. (I would have liked to be in the room when they came up with that name!) The fun continues on Saturday with Big Funk Guarantee + Amanda Miller and the Smoking Sextion.

Things to Do in Iowa City: Music & Night Life

Iowa City is a lively little town. Forget the rural image – If you’re moving here you’ll be surprised at just how much Iowa City has got going for it. (Most folks are – Including me when I relocated here). That’s reason enough for me to show you just how diverse this area of the Midwest is… At the moment I’m concentrating on things to do in Iowa City. In my last post I included movie theaters and community theaters. In this one I’m concentrating more on live music and entertainment venues.

Live Music & Entertainment Venues in Iowa City

Iowa City Summer of the Arts An obvious choice for first spot on this list considering how big these events have become in Iowa City.  In 2005 several organizations with a tradition of providing free family friendly fun events got together under the umbrella organization Iowa City Summer of the Arts. They include the Iowa Arts Festival, the Friday Night Concert Series, the Toyota-Scion Jazz Festival and the MidWest One Movie Series. The great thing about this series of course is that it’s FREE. It runs all summer long and although you won’t find any info yet on this year’s events it’s worth checking out the website and bookmarking it – Summer will be here sooner than you think!

The Mill was voted best live entertainment venue in the area by readers of the Press Citizen. That’s in 2009 and 2010 now… There’s fun stuff going on at the Mill almost every day of the year. And good food too! You will find them @120 E Burlington St – Tel: 319-351-9529

The Yacht Club
is another venue for good music @ 13 S Linn St. – Tel: 319-337-6464

The Sanctuary also has regular shows plus a huge assortment of beers @ 405 S Gilbert St. Tel: 319-351-5692

Iowa City Piano Lounge
offers a different style of music you can drink martinis to @ 217 Iowa Ave. Tel: 319-351-1797

Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon, as the name suggests, this venue is for country music lovers. Unlike the others on this list they’re not downtown. They’re located off the Herbert Hoover Highway @ 4919 Walleye Dr SE. Tel: 319-338-2211

Riverside Casino and Golf Resort
is obviously also not downtown. They’re @ 3184 Highway 22,  Riverside.  Now if you really want to live it up, then the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort has a variety of options for you. It’s so much more than just a casino! They have plenty of live entertainment, karaoke and buffets that people drive for miles for…

New Movies and Events in Iowa City & Coralville This Weekend

Just one new movie release to share with you this weekend as I round up new movies and events in Iowa City and Coralville for this weekend February 19 through February 21.

You can check the schedule for movies at the Coral Ridge Mall Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Cinema in Iowa City…
So what’s new? Only one new release, but it’s a real humdinger! It’s Shutter Island, a Martin Scorsese movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo. Two US Marshals are called in to investigate the disappearance of a murderess from a high-security hospital for the criminally insane. Sounds very creepy to me! Leonardo DiCaprio gets better and better as an actor and it’s a Scorsese film, so you can’t go wrong…

Moving onto the regular theatre…
The Iowa City Community Theatre is taking the stage at The Englert this weekend with performances of Leonard Bernstein’s Musical Wonderful Town.

The Riverside Theater finishes its run of End Days on February 21. If you follow my blog you’ll know this is a play about science, religion and suburbia. (A surprising combination we’re all agreed).

The Mill is one of the liveliest places in town and will deliver it’s usual busy program this weekend. They kick off Friday with Brighton MA - a five piece Chicago rock band and continue through the weekend with a fun packed schedule. You’ll find more info on their website.

If you like your country music with dance then check out the Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon. Great music and great food and free wi-fi…They often have specials too like all you can eat ribs on Wednesdays…They’re on Facebook and do a great job of keeping fans updated on events and specials on their fan page.

Last, but definitely not least for this week I’m going to round it up again with the
Riverside Casino. It’s not all about the casino, they have plenty of live entertainment too. New Odyssey is playing there this weekend – Three guys playing thirty instruments. Impressive!

Plenty to do in Iowa City and Coralville this weekend as you can see – And this only covers things that caught my eye – it’s not an all inclusive list! This is a regular weekly post, so if you have any events to add, just let us know in the comments. I’m sure other readers will appreciate it.
