New Movies & Things to Do in Iowa City & Coralville This Weekend

It’s Friday and time to look at things to do this weekend in Iowa City. Two new movies this week. On July 14 The Sorcerer’s Apprentice came out on general release. Walt Disney, Jerry Bruckheimer, Jon Turteltaub – You’d think that would be an automatic hit. Or not… The reviews are tepid and it doesn’t quite live up to the expectations you might have for this collaboration. Fortunately that’s not the only new movie out this week and Leonardo DiCaprio’s new movie Inception is looking good to wow audiences when it comes out today. Rotten Tomatoes thinks it’s “smart, innovative, and thrilling” – High praise indeed! Not surprising to me. DiCaprio seems to be like fine wine and improves with age, (imho).

You can check out the schedule for movies at the Coral Ridge Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Cinema in Iowa City

As part of Iowa City’s Summer of the Arts Program we have all kinds of things going on outdoors this weekend too.
What’s even better is that these events are FREE!

Friday you can catch The Recliners and Turkana at the Ped Mall. The show starts at 6.30pm and ends at 9.30pm.

Saturday MidWestOne Bank’s Free Movie is Bring it On. It’s showing after sunset at the University of Iowa Pentacrest, outside of Macbride Hall in downtown Iowa City. Before the movie you can see a special performance by the Hawk All-Stars and West High Cheerleaders.

Also on Saturday Poetic Rebound presents A Night of Dance from 6.30pm – 9.00pm. Location: Black Hawk Mini Park outside of Iowa Artisans Gallery at the corner of Washington and Dubuque Street.

New Movies this Weekend – And then there’s The World Cup…

It’s Friday and time to look at new movies this weekend. By the looks of things Steve Carell has landed himself another hit with Despicable Me. Who would have thought that the Daily Show would spawn such a huge box office success? I mean, I love Jon Stewart, but cable tv and the big screen are two different worlds. I think it’s pretty phenomenal that someone who started out in “fake” news has made it big time in quite a different arena!

Now to the movie… It seems Mr Carell’s gotten so big he’s made it to the elite club of actors who lend their voices to an animated character.
You know only the really good ones get to do that, don’t you? In Despicable Me he plays an evil super villain, Gru, who is planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. Of course when three little girls show up in his life it turns out he’s not quite the villain through and through after all. Sounds like good family fun to me. And in 3D too. As an added bonus it has another great character actor lending his voice with Russel Brand too. There has to be at least one Brit in it, right? It seems there’s always one in every film – Or TV series comes to that. At least that’s my observation, or am I just sensitive to it? I don’t know, it seems to me there’s always one Brit anyway…

The other new movie this week is
Predators. What can I say? I’m sure just like Twilight it has a cult following. This time apparently after other sub par sequels this one goes back to its roots. Who knows? It’s another cult movie. You probably already have an opinion. You don’t need mine.

That’s it for movies. Of course it is also World Cup Final weekend.
We have a European Final. Not quite the European Final I was hoping for, but it will be exciting all the same. The team that gets the Cup this time round will win it for the first time. We all know I’m a stats person, so let me blind you with my knowledge on the winners up to now:

There have been just 7 countries that have won the World Cup in its 80 year history.

Brazil – 5 times

Italy – 4 times

Germany – 3 times

Argentina – 2 times

Uruguay – 2 times

France – 1 time

England – 1 time

On Sunday either the Netherlands or Spain will be added to this list.
Spain are the favorites and after their game against Germany in the semi-final I’d probably agree with that. EXCEPT, the World Cup is different. The final of the 2006 World Cup was watched by an estimated 260 million people. That’s pressure. Giants in the game crumble and surprises are the norm. We’ll see…

New Movies in Iowa City and Coralville May 14

Another week has flown by and it’s time for my look at new movies in Iowa City and Coralville. Three new movies this week. The first is Robin Hood. Not exactly a movie that needs a whole lot of introduction. Russell Crowe is our heroic archer looking out for the poor and Cate Blanchet is Maid Marion. How many remakes have there been of this movie? It has to hold some kind of record!

You can check the schedule for movies at the Coral Ridge Mall Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Cinema in Iowa City…

The next new movie is Just Wright, starring Common and Queen Latifah. (This one’s only showing at Sycamore and not at Coral Ridge). In case you’re like me and have no idea what to think of that title, Queen Latifah plays Leslie Wright, a physical therapist with the task of helping a basketball player get back into form after a detrimental injury. No prizes for guessing that romance is in the air…. I love Queen Latifah and am sure this will be a fun movie.

The third new movie this week is
Letters to Juliet. Amanda Seyfried stars as an American visiting Verona, the home of the oh so famous Juliet Capulat, who joins a group of volunteers who answer letters to Juliet. In answering one letter from 1957 sent by the character played by Vanessa Redgrave she sets off a chain of events that change her life and the life of the older woman. Sounds like a thoughtful movie mixing up old and young. I like that.

Iron Man 2
made box office last week. What do you think? Will Robin steal the show this week? Too easy if you ask me, although of course we know I’ve had to eat my words before!

Movies aren’t the only thing going on in Iowa City this weekend – This is a lively little town! For live entertainment check out these theaters and live entertainment venues. I’m sure you’ll find something you like.

New Movies in Iowa City & Coralville May 7

It’s Friday and time for a look at new movies in Iowa City and Coralville. Two new movies this week, although I should say one and a half, as Babies is only showing at Sycamore Mall Movie Theater and not at Coral Ridge. Babies, as the name suggests, is a movie about babies. (Yes, I know, nothing like stating the obvious!) It’s  a documentary about four babies who come into the world in very different parts of the world and follows their lives up to their first steps. It’s a documentary with a difference and will certainly appeal to children who will easily relate to the babies on the screen and probably quickly recognize, (because kids are quick), that it doesn’t matter where you’re born, we’re all going through pretty much the same kind of stuff one way or another. I’ve lived on a few different continents and I’ve seen that time and again. I love the message in this movie and hope it’s huge a success.

You can check the schedule for movies at the Coral Ridge Mall Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Cinema in Iowa City through these links.

The other new movie is our blockbuster and highly anticipated Iron Man 2. So many stars, where do I start? Robert Downey Jr, Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson. Do I need to say more? Blockbuster is definitely not an overstatement! This time round the world knows that Tony Stark is the armored superhero and he’s under pressure to share the technology of his armor with the military. He’s not thrilled about that of course as he’s afraid it may fall into the wrong hands. Familiar storyline, but I’m sure that won’t hold this movie back. Just look at the cast, and then there’s the fact that Robert Downey Jr just gets better and better as an actor! (Okay, so I admit I became a huge fan after being forced by my son to watch Tropic Thunder – Yes forced!)

What do you think? Love or hate him? Be honest – I won’t tell I promise….

New Movies in Iowa City & Coralville April 30

New movie Friday and there are two new ones in Coralville and Iowa City this week to tell you about. The remake of the classic Nightmare on Elm St is the first. And if you don’t know who Freddy is,  then you’ve been living under a rock for the last 25 years! Not my favorite genre I have to admit, the only reason I’m so clued in is that as a mother of two sons you need to keep on top of this kind of stuff!

You can check the schedule for movies at the Coral Ridge Mall Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Cinema in Iowa City…

Freddy aside, Furry Vengeance with Brendan Fraser and  Brooke Shields is the other new movie this week. It tells the tale of a construction guy who in building a supposedly “green” development has a major run in with furry animals who feel their habitat is being ruined. Where was this film last week for Earth Day? Oceans didn’t exactly take the box office by storm, probably a little too educational. I’m sure a good family comedy raising awareness for the planet will fare much better.

What do you think? Family Comedy or Freddy Krueger? I think it’s a tough call this week. Nostalgia versus a good laugh. Tough choices….

Prefer live entertainment to the big screen? Check out these theaters and live entertainment venues in Iowa City. There’s always the Mill, or the Englert, or maybe the Yacht Club, just to name a few…  I’m sure you’ll find something you like.
