Halloween Happenings in Iowa City 2010

Halloween Weekend is coming up. Here are some of the fun things you can be doing in Iowa City this weekend.

Live Entertainment

The Halloween Bash at Gabe’s, starts at 9pm on Saturday and features local favorites Nebula Was, Mad Monks, and Five in a Hand. Admission is $5.

The Mill has a special Halloween Show at 9.00pm Saturday with Celtic rockers Wylde Nept performing. On Sunday October 31 they have their 3rd Halloween tribute show. The idea is that local bands play music from great bands from the past.

The Yacht Club has live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday and gets into the Halloween spirit big time at 9pm Sunday with a special Halloween show with Dead Larry and Roster McCabe. Admission is $6.

Costume Parties

On Saturday you can head on over to the Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon for their Halloween Costume Party. There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. The fun begins at 8.00pm and goes through midnight.

Brothers Bar is having a costume contest throughout the entire weekend with prizes for the best costumes.

Scary movies definitely get plenty of attention around Halloween. It will come as no surprise to you that the only new movie out this week is a horror flick. Saw 3D is sure to be a frightening success. For Halloween fans it’s a great opportunity to don that costume, head for the cinema and be scared to death. In 3D no less – Definitely not for the squeamish!

New Movies & Events in Iowa City & Coralville this Weekend

It’s Friday again and time to look at new movies coming out today in Iowa City and Coralville, (October 15). I’m also going to tell you about a big 10th Anniversary Benefit going on at the Englert, downtown Iowa City tonight. More about that after movies…

Two new movies this week –
The first is so choc-a-bloc with star power it should have no trouble knocking Social Network off its top spot at the box office this week. The movie is RED and stars Bruce WillisMorgan Freeman - John Malkowich and Helen Mirren – It doesn’t get any better than that! Who cares what the storyline is with that kind of star power? I’ll keep it brief and just say it’s a comedy/drama about a group of CIA agents – After being framed for an assassination they find themselves on a target list and are forced embark on a cross country chase to clear their names. Fun stuff.

Going in a totally different direction, (no exaggeration with that statement either). The other new movie this week is Jackass 3-D. Johnny Knoxville is up to his usual antics. I’m sure this has something of a cult following so it will do well, especially in 3-D. No need to explain what it’s about. Followers will already know.

Moving on… The Englert has a great event lined up for this evening.
This year marks the 10th Anniversary of an initiative to save the Englert. Ten years later they are going stronger than ever and tonight their celebrating those 10 years with 10 bands for 10 Bucks. Proceeds of course will go to the Englert.

They’ve got a great line up of local and regional talent. The show kicks off at 7.00pm and the bands will play 15 minute segments. Here’s the list:

The Gilded Bats
The Mayflies
BF Burt
Dave Moore
Monadnoc
Matthew Grimm & the Red Smear
Brooks Strause & the Gory Details
Alexis Stevens
Greg Brown
Shame Train & Friends

We are still enjoying a Golden October here in Iowa City and Coralville. Do you know of some events or things to do in the area this weekend? Just put them in the comments. I’m sure readers will appreciate it.

New Movies & Events in Iowa City & Coralville this Weekend

Saw the trailer for Katherine Heigl’s new movie earlier and thought it was time I got back into posting about the new movies for the weekend. Checking around I also stumbled over a couple of other events to tell you about, more about that later.

Three new movies to tell you about – All aimed at different demographics.
Life as we know it is the obvious place to start. It stars Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel. It’s a movie about 2 single adults who get tasked with being caregivers to an orphaned infant. Definitely one for the gals this one. From the trailer it looks kind of cute, so I’m going to go with it being a hit. It’s up against some pretty tough competition. The horror movie from Wes Craven My Soul to Take is sure to go over well. It will be interesting to see which of these two movies wins out with couples.

Going in a totally different direction, the last new movie this week is from the Disney studios and obviously for kids. Secretariat is the based on the book “Secretariat: The Making of a Champion” By William Nack. Diane Lane plays Penny Chenery, a woman who takes over her father’s horse racing stables when he becomes sick. She rises to the challenge of making it in a man’s world in the 1970′s and ultimately wins the Triple Crown in 1973 with Secretariat, considered the greatest racehorse of all time.

With the wonderful weather you may be interested to know what you can be doing outside this weekend.
You can kick off the weekend on Friday evening with the October Gallery Walk through 20 downtown Iowa City locations. Gallery Walk is an opportunity to take a self-guided tour of new art exhibits in Iowa City. It runs from 5.00pm – 8.00pm and maps are available at each location making it easy to find your way around.

On Saturday, if you head on over to Johnson County Fairgrounds you have a real treat in store for you there – A Professional Rodeo no less – Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bareback Riding, Barrell Racing, Pole Bending & Money the Hard Way.

We Are The World is hosting the benefit.
Gates open at 10am…show starts at 11am and ends at 3pm.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 & under.

Still on the subject of the wonderful weather forecast for the weekend, on Sunday, October 10, there are a couple of opportunities to join in “Run for Your Life” fundraisers.

The first is the Steve Goff Memorial Run/Walk at Ashton Cross Country Course. Registration is at 8.30pm.
The second is the 5k and 1 mile Run/Walk Fundraiser organized by seniors in Iowa City. Families, including pets are welcome. This event is at Lower City Park and packet pick up and registration begins at 8.00am.

We are definitely enjoying a Golden October here in Iowa City and Coralville. These are just a couple of the things that hit my radar of what you can be doing this weekend. If you have any to add, just put them in the comments. I’m sure readers will appreciate it.

New Movies & Events in Iowa City & Coralville this Weekend

Lots of choices when it comes to new movies this week. Just the ticket considering the extremely hot and humid weather we’re having in Iowa City this week. What better place to seek refuge than a nice cool air conditioned movie theater?

You can check out the schedule for movies at the Coral Ridge Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Cinema in Iowa City

Three new movies to tell you about  – And all aimed at different demographics.
The Expendables is chock a block with stars – Rocky Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li and Mickey Rourke just to name a few… It’s an action thriller about a group of mercenaries who are double-crossed while on a mission in South America. This is one for the guys of course. In contrast to that we have Julia Roberts starring in the movie adaptation of the book Eat, Pray and Love. It’s all about a woman who after a painful divorce travels the world on a journey of self-discovery.  Definitely one for the gals here. Wonder which one will win out with couples…

The last new movie this week is Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. It seems this one might be the pick of the bunch this week. It’s a romantic comedy paying homage to video gaming that throws in some rock music for good measure. There’s going to be a huge following for that! It’s based on the comic book of the same name and stars Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The storyline is simple enough, Pilgrim falls head over heals for the girl, Ramona and needs to fight her 7 evil exes to prove he is worthy of her. I can definitely see this one taking off with the young crowd!

Just two more weekends before the fall semester begins at the University of Iowa and the students descend on us again. As much as we’re looking forward to that, not to mention the start of college football, there’s still time for you to head downtown (and still find a parking spot) to enjoy some family fun as the Iowa City’s Summer of the Arts Program continues through August.

New Movies & Events in Iowa City & Coralville this Weekend

It’s Friday and time to look at new movies this weekend in Iowa City and Coralville. There’s been so much going on to write about that I’m having trouble keeping up and missed a couple of weeks – I was starting to get withdrawal symptoms and needed to check out my sources to see what I’ve been missing! It seems Inception is the movie of the year, if not the decade. Still haven’t managed to see it myself, but it’s definitely on my “to do” list.

You can check out the schedule for movies at the Coral Ridge Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Cinema in Iowa City

Two new movies to tell you about this week. The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg is the first one. It’s about a couple of mismatched New York detectives who have trouble getting along. Sure to be a huge hit. The other new movie is Step Up 3-D. This movie is the 3rd installment in the Step Up franchise and will please anyone into the street dancing scene. I’m betting it will be pretty phenomenal in 3-D.

Plenty of things to be doing outdoors this weekend again too. Iowa City’s Summer of the Arts Program continues through August. You can find more info at Summerofthearts.org

We haven’t had too much luck with the weather lately, so fingers crossed that it stays dry for the outdoor events. Especially since we also have HooverFest in West Branch on Saturday with a salute to firefighters and first responders. That event will be getting its own post right after I’m done here. Loads going on there from 8.00am until 11.00pm on Saturday August 7, 2010. Again, fingers crossed that it stays dry!!
